Trip Report

South Fork Hoh River - Big Flat — Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast

First trip to the Hoh!  After getting lost for a bit (make sure you're on the Hoh Mainline road, not Upper Hoh) we got to parking lot and parked between the two other trucks.  We saw both of those groups leaving on our hike in, and we only encountered one other couple in the 4 days we were there.

The forest is dense.  The trail is almost always just wide enough for one person, and there are only a couple places where you could set up more than two two-person tents.  We had two days of sun and two days of rain.  The ground soaks up the water fast so even the hike out was pretty easy, but you'll get wet from all the moisture on the ferns you'll be brushing by for most of the hike.

We set up camp toward the end of the trail, by the river, and found a nice little path down from our site to it.  The river was beautiful and cold.  We encountered some bear scat, but the only animals we saw were chipmunks, toads, and banana slugs.
