As I get older, I find that shorter hikes are more enjoyable than longer treks. Rodney Falls is just such a hike. Located in Beacon Rock State Park is is one of the waypoints along the Hamilton Mt. Trail on the way to the summit. Starting at the Hadley Trailhead (located at the upper end of the main campground) eliminates some serious elevation gain, and is less used than the main trailhead at the lower picnic area.
The Hadley Trail climbs gently under the power lines and crests just as it enters the woods. On your left you will see the plaque dedicated to Clyde B. Hadley the first Superintendent of Beacon Rock SP. Shortly you come to the junction for the Little Beacon Rock Trail originally constructed by the CCC and rerouted by the Chinook Trail Association in 2005. This is a very short side trip of .2 miles and with views of the gorge and Beacon Rock at the terminus.
Continue along the Hadley Trail to its junction with the Hamilton Mt. Trail. Here you will have your best view of Hamilton Mt. and the false summit. Continue uphill through the trees and eventually come to the junction for the Hardy Falls Viewpoint. Unfortunately the view of the falls is obscured by foliage until late fall or winter.
A short distance further you will come to your destination. Rodney Falls is most spectacular during spring run-off but is always a welcome sight.
This is a very popular trail and is best done during the week. You will also need a Discover Pass to park at the trailhead. Beware of the Poison Oak that grows along parts of the trail and check yourself for ticks when you get back home.
