Finally had a full day available, so we decided to hit up Navaho pass. We are, most of the time average speed hikers, but be aware-this trail takes a lot out of you. Since most of the elevation is gradual, the first few miles go quickly, and then our bodies started getting tired and everything seemed a bit harder.
There were many little patches of wildflowers. Since the creek is near you most of the time, we carried little water and just filled up whenever we needed it.
I loved how the scenery changed throughout this hike. You start in the forest with the creek, go through some wildflowers, move up to a more dirt and bare area, then smaller sparse trees, and then the lush green meadow, before reaching, what we called Mars. That area was so surreal, with its grayish dirt coverage, and green and red rocks. I’ve never seen something like this before.
The views from the pass are amazing. We spent lunch there. We contemplated hitting the peak, but we were exhausted and the previous mile had hit us hard, that we were worried about making it, so we called it a day.
While heading up the pass it is easyish going, coming down is a constant mind game for me. There are some steep spots and lots and lots of loose dirt and rock. Lots of slippage because it was hard to find a secure spot to step. Just be warned.
We started early to minimize how long we were in the sun, and applied sunscreen every hour, but somehow still got a bit burned. If it’s projected to be 92* when you go, I suggest hats, pants, and long sleeves. And sunglasses.
It was a fantastic day. We developed a few blisters, and was a hard day for one of our party, so our times were a bit on the slow side. We also like to stop, snack, take pictures and enjoy. It took us 4.5 hours up and 4 hours down. Definitely recommend this hike.
