Glacier Basin — Monday, May. 28, 2018

Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River
Starting the Glacier Basin Trail

Even this early in the season, we decided it would be fun to try to hike Glacier Basin.

It didn’t take long for us to hike above the clouds, with gorgeous views of Mt. Rainier, a few flowers here and there, mostly trillium and yellow violets, and no snow for the first couple of miles.  Lots of climbers and skiers were going up and down, so we knew that there would be a path through the snow and there was. It was still very challenging as the snow got deeper, but we kept plowing our way up until reaching the basin.

It was well worth the effort, watching the mountain and the climbers above us as we ate our lunch, truly spectacular.

On the way back down, it was more slippery, but easier to find our route. The bridges were especially difficult with such high snow banks on either side, adding to the challenge.

The distance on the sign is definitely incorrect, it is four miles from the trail head to the basin, more if you go further in to the basin.
