I got to the trailhead at 7:30 and snagged the last real parking spot. I find that pretty impressive, but the weatherman said it was going to be a great day, so of course everyone goes outside. At about 8:10, when I was doing the last rundown of my pack and getting my shoes on, someone actually asked if I was leaving. Imagine their disappointment when I said no. When you go slow, everyone passes you and you get to enjoy the nice quietness of the forest. I saw a doe on the trail who did some astonishing limbo work under a couple fallen trees to get back to wilderness. Got some video of a skink, too. Kudos to the woman wearing the backpack with the patch that says, “Hatin’ for Satan,” because she knows proper trail etiquette and let me know she was passing me and on what side. After the boulder field, on the climb up, I managed to have some life questions: Why is littering still a thing? How is it that the hikingest area of the US only has a handful of people on the trail who know that you yield to climbers? Up top was great. I creeped out some people by being nice and talking to them. I took a quick pic with the mailbox and ate some of those flying bugs with my mountain brownie. All around, a good asskicker of a hike. A couple final notes: DNR didn’t stock the outhouses with TP, so bring your own. Whoever stood on the toilet and shat on the toilet seat in the women’s restroom: (1) gross; and (2) you owe me a lot of baby wipes.
