I hiked the Mt. Dickerman trail yesterday with the Whidbey Island SOB (Sons of the Beach or Searchers of Beer) men's hiking group. It was a great day for a hike as the temps were just right for this workout. Great old growth to view in the first half of the hike, but the real pay-off are the expansive vistas that you get in the second half of the hike as the forest areas become more open and you get the alpine meadows and lots of berries.
About half of the trail is very rocky or root covered, so I would recommend poles. The biggest issue is that it is just a constant up at a rate of about 1000 feet of elevation for each mile of trail. There are very few flat stretches, and those are short. A lot of clouds, so we didn't get the full impact of the views this trail would have to offer on a clearer day, but still they were great.
