Thornton Lakes and Trappers Peak — Monday, Aug. 21, 2017

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
flat part

A little about the road. At about 4 miles you'll encounter a steep uphill grade, which would be bad enough, but within this uphill grade are some of the bumpiest potholes I've come across. So bumpy, a spark plug wire came loose from a spark plug and we stalled out in the middle of that particular stretch of road. Had to back down, re-attach the plug wire and give it another try. There's no way you can take a run at it because if you hit theses ruts at a good speed, likely you'd be bounced clean out of the car. This all took place in a 4 cylinder small pick-up truck, perhaps a bigger engine would work better.

Started from the trailhead at about 9am and walked a level stretch of old logging road which then turned to real trail, for a little over 2 miles. This is all through forest which most of the hike is. From the end of the flat, the trail goes up, up and more up, gaining most of the 2900 feet in the last three miles, passing the Park Boundary at about 4 miles and then the junction with the Trappers Peak trail. We opted for the lake trail and finally arrived at a the high point. The views of the lake are sparse but available. All in all a good hike and workout.
