The bugs are in full bloom at Indian Henry's. But so are the flowers, and they're worth the slog up Rampart Ridge and then up to Devil's Dream.
This was a trail run/hike for me -- I did it in celebration of starting the Wonderland three years ago today. All the old memories came rushing back as I huffed and puffed the switchbacks. I wondered to myself, "How the heck did I ever do this with a 40 pound pack!?"
I ran into a couple of hikers from California and New York who started their Wonderland journey today, they were marveling at the Mountain near Kautz Creek. I encountered them again as I was running back and handed them my Hike-A-Thon "Make Your Miles Count" badge as a talisman for their trek.
Bugs are bad, especially during your ascent to Devil's Dream, Devil's Dream Camp and Indian Henry's. If you stop for a few seconds you'll be swarmed. I was DEETed up and my running clothes were treated, so I made it out with no bites. But beware, the mosquitos up there are out for lunch -- and they will bite through thin layers of clothing. (I know this from previous experience.) They are especially bad as you approach the Hunting Ground, you can see them swarming over the ponds dotting the meadows.
Creeks are low, and some are dry. But you'll find plenty of water.
As always, the meadows and views of Rainier are amazing. A fine reward for your miles of climbing.
