Surprise and Glacier Lakes — Saturday, Jul. 22, 2017

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

The Surprise Lake trail is between Skykomish and Stevens Pass.  At just over 4 miles from the TH to the lake you ascend approximately 2300' in altitude with the trail meandering along Surprise Creek most of the way.  The views start to open up about 2 miles up the trail and there are numerous former landslide areas that also provide views.  The lake is gorgeous and crystal clear.  There are plenty of rocks to sit around on the shoreline to help you rest and gather your strength for the hike back down.  If you have extra energy head on up to Glacier Lake which is another 400' or so above Surprise Lake.

There are no major obstacles on the trail but the Berry bushes and alder trees are crowding the trail particlularly in the first mile of the trail and then in the former Avalanche chutes.  I would suggest wearing long pants.  Also bring insect repellent - the black flies were especially annoying all along the trail.

To get to the trailhead from Skykomish follow the WTA directions BUT take the 2nd right after you see the Iron Goat Interpretive Trail sign.  The first turnoff takes you to the former Scenic town but it is private property.  The next turnoff takes you across a bridge and into a railroad maintenance yard.  Veer to the right after crossing the bridge, cross the railroad tracks and take an immediate right.  This road will then take you into the trees and another 1/4 mile to the trailhead.  The parking is very limited at the TH.  There is a sign for a privy at the trailhead but we did not check it out.
