I love this area. Greenwater is a great overnight trip for beginners, families or just people who don't want a long hike in.
I tried for Echo Lake a few weeks ago and had no luck, had to turn around bec of snow conditions. I went back this week and took my snowshoes with me. Made it there without putting them on but it snowed about 5 inches the next morning so I used them to hike out. SOOOOO, if you go for Echo, I think you can make it without gear, but be careful because there is still a ton of post holing to be done out there.
Trail was in good shape but really wet in places. Lake is BEAUTIFUL. The river is epic this time of year.
Took me about 3 hours to hike to Echo and a few of the campsites were snow free when I got there.
