Joe Watt Canyon — Friday, May. 5, 2017

Snoqualmie Region > Cle Elum Area
Taking in the sunrise..
I am beyond astonished that this place isn't more popular than it is. I decided to take the pup out for a little camping trip and the Joe Watt Canyon did NOT disappoint. The campgrounds are conveniently placed just inside the gate at the main trailhead and seem to be open to anyone. There is a ton of space so even when there are other campers you still get that sense of seclusion. There is also a stunning view of the mountains from the first couple campsites. The sites are set up on either side of the main green dot road and are easy to access. In regards to the actual trails, they are seemingly never-ending. There is a map located at the first parking area outside the gate with some highlighted trails but there are quite literally hundreds of trails for miles around the surrounding area. Everything from old abandoned roads to straight up game trails, all of which will take you through some very diverse and beautiful wilderness. The wildlife is abundant and the flora is breathtaking...and EVERYWHERE. The amount of the natural color spectrum you are able to take in is enough to make one never want to leave. It is a perfect area for dogs but I can see there being some snake danger in the hotter months of the year. Just keep an eye out and the pups should be fine. We started our Joe Watt adventure after setting up camp on day #1. We just did a little 4 mile loop to check out the area and that completely fueled our motivation for day #2. After waking up to one of the most beautiful sunrises I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing, we took down the trusty tent and headed out for solid 11 mile loop through the canyon and back. The creek water seems to be crystal clear but always use some type of purification of course. I would recommend this area to anyone who hasn't been yet. It's well worth the drive no matter what part of WA you live in. It was about a 3 hour drive from Spokane Valley. Will be going back this weekend as well for sure. Happy trails!
Just a small sample of some of the amazing flora.
The view just a short ways from our campsite
