Chester Butte Wildlife Area by gojon
The unpaved road into the area had deep ruts and potholes. You'd have to be highly skilled and lucky to thread a sedan in and out without getting stuck. And this place is so remote; go high clearance or don't go. I was the only human in the area. No other vehicles parked there, either. The hike description said to go north of the butte for a way up. I never found that way. I suspect you're supposed to south, instead, for the trail up. The old jeep track trail makes for easy hiking, though. Spectacular expansive views of the scour-scabland sage, with glacial erratics all around. I saw many endangered sage grouse, and heard many more. Lots of other, more common, bird activity, too. It was windy. I got the sense that it's often like that.
