Trip Report
Fort Columbia State Park - Scarborough Hill — Monday, Mar. 27, 2017
Southwest Washington > Long Beach Area
I don’t know how I’ve never noticed Scarborough Hill on my many drives between Longview and Cape D, but I’m glad I made this stop. The trail is a quiet one – I am surprised how many of the trails I hiked on this trip had other visitors, but on this one, I was solo. I went clockwise, up Scarborough Trail and down the old road, but I wish I’d gone the other way – the road was muddy and slippery on the way down, and the trail would have been easier to descend.
The short spur at the summit is really soggy, with numerous blowdowns. It’s fast, but I wouldn’t say it’s worth it. There’s a funny little wooden post stuck into a concrete block that marks the end of the trail, but an overgrown path continues on beyond it. It descends into the saddle between the summit of Scarborough Hill and another nearby summit, but it’s probably best to stay on what’s definitely the state park’s property, so I wouldn’t go beyond the post.
