Trip Report

Guemes Mountain — Friday, Aug. 26, 2016

Puget Sound and Islands > San Juan Islands
Hiked up Guemes Mountain today with friends and partners from Skagit Land Trust and WTA supporters to look at possible improvements to the trail. The trail shows a little wear in places but is in great hiking form for the most part. Saved from development by the efforts of local islanders, San Juan Preservation Trust and Skagit Land Trust, and generous donors, the Spring blooming camus and endless views from the top of Guemes Mountain are accessible to the public year round. A bit of a stretch from Skagit Land Trusts usual model of restoring tracts of land, this gem is kept in great shape through efforts of local trail stewards and SLT staff and volunteers and more closely resembles a community park with strategically placed benches and overlooks. Access is gained through a generous easement through private land at the trailhead to about the halfway point. Consider supporting SLT in their ongoing efforts and be respectful of the sensitive areas at the top and along the trail. Stay tuned for potential work party dates in late 2016/ early 2017.
