Trip Report

Palisades, Little Ranger Peak via Ranger Creek — Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Hematomes congestum
Began the trek at the Palisades Trailhead, they have done trail work and cleared some blowdowns and made some passeable. After surviving the switchbacks , you arrive at the staircase and continue on to viewpoint one shortly after. The views are stunning! Viewpoint 2 follows shortly after and will equally please! Continue through to viewpoint 3, passing wildflowers, huckleberries, magical forests on your way. At this viewpoint you can watch helicopters fly below you at ranger creek airport. Very cool. Continue on the trail, dipping back I to the shades forest and continue until you reach Ranger Creek Shelter (pic). We did hear some howling, I am hopeful it was domestic dogs... Bugs were a bit pesky here as we ate lunch. Follow the signs and head down Ranger Creek Trail. I was worries about the condition of this trail, but it is very clear and passeable. One wiped out tree where you need to kind of take your time on the slippery dirt and that is it. Lits of mushrooms and switchbacks here. Mostly shaded hike and only encountered one other person. A mountain biker, to him, I hope you beat your friend to the shelter!

Gnome plants are one of our favorite "finds" when we are hiking. We haven't seen any for 2 or 3 years. In what section were the gnome plants?

They were on the Ranger Creek Trail...we were coming down the trail, maybe around mile 3 from the shelter.

What a quick reply! :)! It came as I was reading the WTA trail description of your hike. At almost 79 and 77 I don't think we could handle that many miles and that much elevation gain! :(! We have slowed down a lot this year, but are thankful we can still hike!

The switchbacks are long are the ranger creek trail, which I have read can be started near the entrance to the buck creek campground. That would make it 3 or 4 miles to the gnome plant. We were pretty tired at that point, so it is an estimate! I was happy to find something so unusual! I had to research to find out what it was. Happy hiking to you!

Bob and I hiked the Ranger Creek Trail on Tuesday. We began at the TH near the Buck Creek Recreation Area. We found your gnome plants at 3 1/2 miles. There were 3 above the trail just before these. Bob hiked another 1/2 mile and found about 12 more above the trail. If it hadn't been for your report, we would not have hiked this trail! We saw over 30 candy stick plants, more than we had ever seen on any other trail! Most were past their prime. We would have liked to have been here 2-3 weeks earlier when the plants were at their prime! Maybe next year!
