Trip Report

Tonga Ridge / Mount Sawyer, Deception Creek — Sunday, Jul. 3, 2016

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West
The Summit of Sawyer
Got to Tonga Ridge TH at about 10:30 this morning, with 2 other cars in the lot. Hiked along the ridge where the Indian's Paintbrush, Lupine and many other wildflowers were all in bloom. The air was full of their scent! Saw a total of 4 grouse, 2 on the trail (one of which had baby grouse with her) and 2 on the road. Tonga Ridge was in exceptional condition, save for two blowdowns and on the way out to Deception Creek, my dad and I saw no one except ourselves. Deception Creek was a little muddy, but not to bad at all. When we broke for lunch by Deception Creek, bugs were flying all around, but none were landing or biting. While we were heading back, we decided to head up Mt. Sawyer, which is not well marked, and the cairn is a little hard to see. Trail up to Sawyer was great, just two very small patches of snow on the north face but were easily crossed. Gorgeous view of the Monte Cristo Group from the summit! Definitely would like to return.
