You could make it to the lake, EASILY, with nothing but solid hiking boots. The trail is easily accessible and packed down snow. My pup had a field day on this trail!
That being said, you won't be able to get to the epic views with just hiking boots. And the views are WORTH it.
Also, look out for the naked man hiking. He was amusing, but your kids may not appreciate him.

Who is this naked man! I hiked this trail a week ago and there were no nude surprises!
