Trip Report
Lookout Mountain Forest Preserve — Monday, Feb. 29, 2016
Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
I do not typically write trip reports but have decided to start doing so for a couple reasons; to track where I have been and to share the experience from the point of a view of a novice hiker. I belong to a group of women who are trying to get out and walk/hike each week and we would all consider ourselves leisure hikers.
This trailhead was easy to find using the directions on this site and there was plenty of parking (weekday) and a bathroom. Today we walked the Lower Lookout Trail and the Waterfall Loop Trail. The steepest sections were the beginning of the walk on the service road and the section leading up to the waterfall. I just plug along at my own pace! This is a very enjoyable trail, fairly wide in most areas and meanders through a nice section of forest. A few little ups and down, a little muddy in a few places and only one place where I lost my footing (near where the Waterfall Loop trail connects back to the service road). The waterfall is worth the effort to reach it.
The sections of trail we hiked were perfect for a group like us and would be great for families. We intend to come back and hike the Lookout Loop trail next time.
