Trip Report

Deer Lake, Sol Duc Falls — Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
Hiked from the Sol Duc Falls trail head in the afternoon up towards Deer Lake. We made it to campsite #1 across the first Canyon Creek Bridge and encountered some snow before the campsite, easily crossed it without crampons or axe. Very few hikers along the Canyon Creek section, great views of the rapids along the trail! The weather is fairly warm below the first bridge over Canyon Creek but cools noticeably above this (~3300'). The campground is mostly clear of snow however all wood is thoroughly soaked and difficult to coax into warm fire. Another hiker told us there was much more snow cover above our site. Pros: rivers and falls well supplied for great views, having trail to yourself, no bugs! Cons: cold and wet for camping, snow making some parts of trail slick, volunteers have not cleared all fallen trees from trail but still very passable.
