The Skagit Wildlife Area on Fir Island offers me something different every time I go there. Now that its summer, the water levels are down, and the migratory birds of winter are up north. Blackberries are all over the place. Herons are hanging out, looking for fish. My bird sighting for the day was a belted kingfisher. An eagle's nest way in the distance. The trailhead is 5 minutes off of I-5. The dike trail is wide, easy to walk on. It narrows toward the tail end, as you reach the Skagit River. Great place to hike, whatever the weather. Yesterday had a nice wind, with rain to come in the air. I'm taking part in WTA's Hike-A-Thon, which helped inspired me to go out and get a few miles in at the end of the day.
