Heather - Maple Pass Loop — Friday, Jul. 24, 2015
North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
I've been wanting to go up to the North Cascades for a while now, and it finally happened! And this hike was a perfect example of the beauty of the North Cascades.
We chose to do the loop counter-clockwise, and were very happy with our decision.
It was raining on and off for the better part of the morning. We weren't too bothered by it, but we prayed for a break once we got to the very top so we could see some awesome views!
We decided to take the pit stop to Lake Ann (it is so short, you may as well do it!). We were able to see where we would be summiting, but we had no idea which ridge it was. We originally thought it was much lower. Boy, were we (pleasantly) surprised.
Our views going up this way were unparalleled. The mountains were absolutely incredible, and the hike really wasn't bad at all. Barely any switchbacks, the trail was very well maintained, and the uphill hike was very gradual. We were really able to enjoy ourselves without feeling exhausted.
Once we got to the top, we were blown away. This hike is truly perfect. The lakes, the meadows, the huge pale boulders, the colorful wildflowers. Absolutely everything I had dreamed of!
The way down was definitely not as scenic as the way up. The switchbacks are in the understory, and unfortunately you only get a couple of glimpses of Rainy Lake. I think going counter clockwise was the way to go though. I'd hate to go up all those switchbacks with no view at the beginning, but the way down would be nicer (especially on the knees!). It all depends on which you want to experience first.
I loved Maple Pass and I can't wait to do it again sometime in the fall!

I'd actually like to add a little correction to the WTA driving directions. You actually turn into the Rainy Pass Picnic Area to access the trailhead. If you pull into the Rainy Pass parking lot, you'll end up on the PCT! The picnic area is right across the highway from Rainy Pass, and both are well signed.
