Camano Ridge Trail — Wednesday, May. 6, 2015

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Species?
A quick hike for exercise and to see the colors of spring. The vivid greens from the new growth did not disappoint. The Forest Loop Trail is my favorite route on Camano Ridge.

Yellow Flower

Definitely a poppy. I'm pretty sure it is a non-native species. There is a small patch of them growing in the greenbelt behind my house in Bellevue.

Icelandic Poppy

I finally ID'd that flower. It is a non-native but a very beautiful one. It comes in many colors. Today I saw several light orange ones in the greenbelt near Coal Creek.

Yellow Flower

This is Welsh Poppy (Meconopsis cambrica) and not Iceland poppy (Papaver croceum). It is typical for Welsh Poppy to naturalize weedily in the Puget Lowland whereas Iceland poppy may not be known as a wild plant here at all. Otherwise the leaves and growth habits of the two plants are different.
