We wanted to introduce our 3.5 month old son, Jack, to the North Cascades before the road closed for the winter. We couldn't have been happier with our choice of Blue Lake as the hike for us!
The trail was well maintained with a few, easily passable, blowdowns. There was intermittent snow on the trail within the first mile. As we neared the lake, a little more than a quarter of a mile away, the trail was completely covered in snow and some ice. We had brought along our MICROspikes and were glad we did, it definitely made the hike less intimidating and more enjoyable!
There were several streams for our Golden Retriever to water at along the way, plus he loves to eat snow.
When we went up the pass on Saturday there was only a light dusting of snow. However, on our way back Sunday morning a storm was coming in and we were driving through a couple of inches of snow on the road. The pass is still open but WSDOT warns of wintery conditions on the road. I'd say if you can, head up to this beautiful hike before the road closes until May!

Blue bundled baby at Blue Lake!
Great photos of Blue Lake. And of Jack. Super cute. Thanks, also, for the tips on microspikes.
