Trip Report

Mount Angeles — Wednesday, Sep. 24, 2014

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
The information for this hike given by the WTA is a little misleading, don't get me wrong it is all accurate, it is just mismatched. The driving directions take you to a small parking area before you get to the hurricane ridge parking lot. The hiking instructions start you off from the hurricane ridge parking lot not the smaller heart of the hills parking lot. This hike was great, there was a troop of forestry department trail maintainers who were very nice. There are a number of great switchbacks that lead you passed the first junction (left for hurricane ridge and right for more switchbacks) and all the way to the top where you'll find a sign that had four or five routes on it and none of them to the summit of Mount Angeles. The route I took to the summit was a left at the sign onto a very small trail that initially leads along the ridge, drops a little, and takes you to the start of the scramble. The instructions are correct,Experienced scramblers only. The difficulty of this scramble was compounded by heavy winds and cloud cover that made me a little uncomfortable at times. My opinion is that if you get to the top and the conditions are not perfect, save the summit for another day and hike to lake Angeles instead. Anyway it is a great hike and well maintained!
