Cutthroat Pass via Cutthroat Lake — Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014
North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
I hiked Cutthroat Pass from the eastern approach - i.e. from Cutthroat Lake campground (milepost 167 from highway 20 east of Washington Pass - the alternative approach is from Rainy Pass which is west of Washington Pass). The trail has been hard-hit by recent torrential rains - multiple blowdowns and one big slide (about half way from parking lot to Cutthroat Lake turnoff) but it has all been logged out (except for one tree that is easy to scramble across) and the trail is in remarkably good condition, considering. The views were gorgeous, as usual on this trail, and they start early. Few wildflowers (the last of the paintbrush and a few asters) but the fall color is starting (blueberries, larches). All in all a great hike.
