Trip Report

Melmont Ghost Town — Tuesday, Jun. 24, 2014

Mount Rainier Area > NW - Carbon River/Mowich
Not too many views throughout our hike besides some peekaboos of the river
Had a bit of a disappointing hike today, while we attempted to find the melmont ghost town. Thanks to the information provided on this website, we were able to find the start of the trail just North of the bridge on Hwy 165. We hopped the railing and went down the steep hill, where we found the trail. We headed east (turning left on the bottom of the hill) and proceeded to hike through some fairly muddy trails. The trail split about 1.5 miles in and we stayed to the right, the route closest to the river. This must have been the wrong route because we hiked another couple miles and never came across the town. Even though I really wanted to keep going, in hope that the town was just around the corner, we decided to turn around, being that my wife is very pregnant and we had our 2 year old with us as well. It was not a difficult hike, but I wish it was more clearly marked so that we could have found the town. Perhaps staying left at the split is the correct route but I'm not sure. However, we hiked a good 3-4 miles over the course of 90 minutes and were unlucky today. Hope this helps!

Melmont Ghost Town

Where the trail splits is the start of the townsite. If you went left it would take you up to the old school (which the foundation remains). If you went right it took you into a large field which was the rest of the town. Sometimes the ruins are very overgrown with nettle and salmonberry, so it's hard to spot the remains. Hopefully you saw the old dynamite house? It's was on the trail before the splitoff...

Harteau Hikers on Melmont Ghost Town

Oh I see! I appreciate the comment. We did see a large open field/meadow after taking the trail to the Right but we did not spot any remains. We did see an old stone house early in the trial which must have been the old dynamite house.
