Oak Creek Road - Bethel Ridge — Friday, Feb. 14, 2014

Central Washington > Yakima
Hiking In in Heavy Snow Photo (c) David Hagen
I led my 4th Winter Walk of the season for the Cascadians up the Oak Creek Road on this foggy, snowy day. There was not much snow on the road at the beginning, but just enough to cover patches of ice which made it a little treacherous at times. We walked as far as the mouth of Hoover Canyon (3.7 mi) and found a bare spot under some Ponderosa pines for lunch. There was probably 2" or so of snow on the ground at this point. We spent maybe 45 min for lunch, then headed back down the road. It had been snowing heavily all day, but about 1/2 mile from the end it suddenly let up and the fog cleared. The only wildlife we saw was a white rabbit eating some hay at the beginning of the road, a few birds, and a couple of squirrels. By the time we got down to Naches, the snow had turned to rain.

Hi mytho-man,

Could you provide directions for this hike coming from the Seattle area? Also any details about length of trail/road?

Thanks!
Erik

Erik - From Ellensburg take I-82 to Yakima and take the Hwy 12 exit signed for Naches & White Pass. Stay on Hwy 12 at the junction with Hwy 410. A couple of miles past the junction you will come to the Oak Creek Wildlife Area Visitor Center/Elk Feeding Station and 100 yards or so beyond that to the signed Oak Creek Road. There is a large pull-out here (usually plowed if there's snow on the ground) or you can park at the Elk Feeding Station. The Oak Creek road is gated & closed to motorized travel in the winter (there is a pedestrian pass-through). The road (#1400) follows Oak Creek for 7 or 8 miles and then climbs another 4 or 5 miles to Bear Lake on Bethel Ridge. There are a number of secondary roads that take off from the main road beyond Indian Creek (approx 5 miles in). Most of the road shows on the Green Trails map #305 Tieton, WA. Bear Lake is on #304 Rimrock,WA. Hope this helps.
