Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

We did a car camping trip over to the Bumping River area off of Highway 410 east of Chinook Pass at the Soda Springs Campground. One of our hikes was the Soda Springs Trail that starts from the campground and crosses the Bumping River on a sturdy bridge. We headed up the main trail that switchbacks up the hill side before getting to a trail junction with the Spring Trail 975A. Further up the trail crosses over Peak 4181 with views out to Mt. Rainier, Goat Peak and Old Scab Mtn. We hiked a few miles through the forest and decided to turn around as there were not any great views. Stopped for lunch at Peak 4181 before heading back down. At the trail junction we decided to go down the Soda Spring Trail 975A to the Bumping River and the campground. This trail has some more uphill sections and some really steep downhill parts. Back at the river we passed the old Soda Spring where water is bubbling out of the ground. These trails do not see much use, but any fallen trees have been cut out. No skeeters and only a few deer flies seen on this trip. No other hikers or wildlife were seen.
