I'm really glad we left the Jetta at home. After reading previous reviews of the road they can not be understated. Someone actually got a VW Beetle down the road about 2 miles into 9. All trucks and SUVs after that. We made it down in 2WD just fine with a little slipping towards the trailhead.
We arrived around 9:30AM and had the trail to ourselves until we headed back. It appears most people turned around at the 3 mile mark (which is a great place to stop for a snack) but pushed along to a bridge at 5.1 miles and it was well worth it. A beautiful waterfall on a sturdy (but obvious tree-fall damaged) bridge really was the icing to the cake on this trip.
We'll return to this later in the year to make it an overnight further down the trail. There was plenty of ice; I recommend bringing the trekking poles. After the 3 mile mark there were occasional potholing but in general the trail was in good shape. Plenty of obstacles but nothing serious. I wouldn't recommend small children unless you don't mind carrying them over some of the creeks and getting your feet a little wet. I would say this trail rates a "10" on scenery.
