Railroad Bridge Park — Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
Railroad Bridge

Railroad Bridge Park is part of the Olympic Discovery Trail. In 1992 volunteers replaced the railroad ties and planked the deck of the almost 100 year old former railroad bridge. The finished product is now a beautiful 600 foot bridge crossing the Dungeness River providing a bike and pedestrian path as part of the Olympic Discovery Trail. The Dungeness River Audubon Center is located here, but it is closed on Sunday and Monday so we were unable to visit it. At the east end of the bridge there is a ramp access for bicyclists and handicapped people. We spent a pleasant 2 hours exploring the area before returning home.

Railroad Bridge

Railroad Bridge Park is 2 miles west of Sequim at 2151 West Hendrickson Road. There is good information at this website: www.dungenessrivercenter.org. (I apologize for not knowing how to make this a link you can click on!) We had camped at Sequim Bay SP Friday and Saturday nights and had to be out by 1:00 so didn't have a long time to explore on Sunday. Apparently there are some river trails to explore, but the Audubon Center was closed so we couldn't learn more. The map on the board at the east entrance to the bridge wasn't adequate. Because the trail is part of the Olympic Discovery Trail, I'm sure one could spend a day in the area. I hope this is helpful to you! :)! Have a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!
