Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
One of several large stumps with interesting roots
Craig Romano has an excellent description of this hike in his book, "Day Hiking Olympic Peninsula". We had been camping at the park over the week-end and did this hike before returning home. We began the hike at the back of the CG behind the platform tents at the sign for Maple Valley. There were 2 trees across the trail near the start, but they were easily navigated. One bridge was out, but one could cross the creek on rocks. WTA has done much work in this area in the past. Maple Valley with its large maples is very green and beautiful with several large stumps which have interesting roots growing down the sides. There were many decaying logs with aging turkey tails. This is a very pleasant hike with only gradual elevation gains.
