In a month, Old Dog & I will be hiking the PCT from Cascade Locks to White Pass. Good friends will meet us at Sheep Lake via Nannie Ridge trail and then on through the Goat Rocks to White Pass. We came in to check out the trail.
The 1st concern was a sign at the trail head with a notice that Road 21 was going to be closed on July 20 for 30 days. The only access to Nannie Ridge or Snowgrass Flats will be from Randle via FS road 23 to road 21 adding many more miles to the trailhead access.
The trail was clear until about 2 miles when it became about 70% snow covered. With a little route finding we made it to the saddle at the base of Nannie Peak. The trail to Sheep Lake drops to the east but we chose obvious side trail to the left up Nannie Ridge. It started snow free but rapidly disappeared. The top of the ridge was in sight so we slogged up though the snow to what was suppose to be the site of an old fire lookout. Lunch was on a large knob of lava with spectacular views to the Goat Rocks, Cispus Basin and Mt Adams. It was a great day to be out with sun and a slight breeze to keep the bugs down.
