Reports are filtering in from the WTA Volunteer Vacation crew that spent the week of April 17-24 at Moore Point on the shores of Lake Chelan. Upon arrival, a scan of the camp area revealed morel mushrooms soon to be picked and enjoyed with dinner. With reports of trees having fallen across the trail, there was excitement at the prospect of cross cutting trees to open the trail. The work was fortunate enough to take place in an absolutely stunning location that made the daily journey to the job site a pleasure. The usual early season display of flowers did not disappoint, as fairy slipper orchids could be found in their usual places, with balsamroot and paintbrush not far away. Quaking aspens and chocolate lilies greeted the crew, while other times it was the deer and geese doing the welcoming. Each day the crew hiked portions of the trail, as it rises to spectacular vista’s and drops by the lake shore and then back up again. Crew Leader Janice noted “A very productive and satisfying week on Moore Point for all of us. I am so pleased with the work that we accomplished but more so for the wonderful attitudes and energy of the crew.” The volunteers, based out of Moore Point, logged out the Lakeshore trail north to the DNR Boundary and south to Meadow Creek. Approx 7.5 miles of trail were cleared by this ambitious crew as well as tread repair for another 3000’. Somewhere along the way, new friendships formed, memories were shared, and a deep appreciation for the beauties of the Chelan area was had by all. WTA crews will be clearing the rest of the trail south to Prince Creek over the next couple weeks; as well as working both the Fish Creek and Prince Creek drainages. Say hi if you see them on this amazing stretch of trail.
