West Fork Buttermilk, Courtney Peak — Friday, Oct. 2, 2026

I did an overnight at Star Lake, with a side trip up Courtney Peak. The larches are peaking - now is the time to go! There were five or six parties at the lake on Friday night October 2, but as I was headed out Saturday morning, many more backpackers were headed in. Lots of day hikers out enjoying the perfect conditions as well. The parking lot was overflowing down the road.

Trail to the lake is in great shape with just a few small blowdowns and muddy spots. I had never climbed Courtney before, so I was glad I was able to find a trail to follow almost all the way to the top.

This was my first time to this lake, and the setting was truly spectacular.
