Owyhigh Lakes — Monday, Sep. 21, 2026

My hiking group had a great fall hike to Owyhigh Lakes today. Two cars were in the Th lot when we pulled in at 9:10. It was 52 degrees with sunny skies. This trailhead has no toilet so stop at the entrance station on the way into the park or plan to green door. The entire trail was hard packed mostly dry soil. Fall colors were beautiful in the Lakes basin and below Tamanos, and Chimney Rocks area when we continued south on the trail. Blueberry and huckleberry shrubs brilliant orange/ red. A lone lupine and 2 cinquefoil were holding their summer color. Wildlife sighting was minimal- 2 camp robbers and a couple squirrel / chipmunks. Backtracking we stopped above Owyhigh lakes for a leisurely lunch / rest break. Trail traffic was really light. We passed a large group of overnight backpackers returning from the lakes basin and 3 other solo hikers. Another amazing day out in nature.
