Mount Ellinor — Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
The long traverse on Mt. Ellinor

The drive: FS road 2419 is in good condition, with only a few nests of potholes to thread through. The spur road to the upper TH, 2419-014, is tougher, with some rough rocky patches that require caution. We were glad to be in an AWD vehicle with good clearance. We hiked from the upper TH, hike distance 3.2 miles, elevation gain about 2,450'.

TH parking was crowded, with vehicles parked along the shoulder for some distance. The vault toilet hasn't been maintained in some time, no TP, plus an overflowing trash can.

The incredible Mount Rose Trail Crew has continued its work on this steep and challenging trail. There are more rock and timber steps than ever, with some sections resembling an endless staircase. We were happy to have our trekking poles, particularly to ease the descent.

The meadow along the big traverse is in full bloom, perfectly lovely. Views from the summit included seeing the parts of burned area from last year's Staircase forest fire. THEM, Olympia.
