Melakwa Lake — Monday, Jul. 20, 2026

This is my second time up to Melakwa, but this hike I had just a day pack vs. an overnight pack. The climb up Hemlock Pass is definitely sweaty regardless, especially if you're looking to cool off in the waters as a reward on a hot day, but there's a good rhythm of tree cover and shade to rehydrate under as you ascend.

Arrived on Sunday the 19th at about 0915 to a surprisingly easy parking situation, given how perfect the weather was. Middle and lower lot spaces were plentiful.

The trail is in good shape, no blowdowns, very little erosion damage. The Denny Creek rock slides area is easy to cross with such a dry year we've had, and Keekwulee Falls is flowing pretty low. The best spot to refill water after the slides will be the single log footbridge crossing in the ravine leading up to the pass. I counted 4-5 backpacking groups heading down on my way up, and found just 2 tents pitched around the lake when I got there.

Up at Melakwa, a good breeze kept bugs at bay, allowing for a bit of lunch, wading, splashing, and watching packrafters and swimmers enjoy the glittering water.

I believe this trail is undercounted in terms of mileage -- Garmin tracked ~4.5 miles up to the lakeshore signage from the Denny Creek trailhead. With some wandering around the shore and over to Upper Melakwa, I clocked a 9.42 mile total out & back.
