Pyramid Peak, Government Meadows — Thursday, May. 28, 2026

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

I drove FR 70 and 7080, parked on the side of the road and hiked from Pyramid Pass. This approach involves 7 miles of unpaved road, which is mostly in good shape. I even met a road grader working along the unpaved part of 70. There are a few areas of deeper gravel that can make steering a challenge and there are sections of road with sharp rocks. But with careful driving any car can make it.

I first climbed Pyramid Peak which is quite steep!  The grade after leaving the PCT to climb to the peak is about 1150 ft/mile, but it is only that steep for .6 mile. The trail is in good shape with lots of crunchy duff from old fir cones with just a couple of easy blowdowns to step over. Nice tree cover going up and amazing views at the top. No snow to speak of.

Once back to my car I had only hiked 2.2 miles so decided to head south on the PCT and went as far as Government Meadow. Smooth, easy trail with just a few short sections of snow remaining.

Fun trails and I had it completely to myself the entire hike. Gaia stats: 5.3 miles with 1049 ft. ascent
