Trip Report

North Fork Loop — Sunday, May. 24, 2026

South Cascades > White Pass/Cowlitz River Valley
Burley Mountain

I was nearby scouting for another trail and found this little gem connected so I took it for a saunter.

I started by the bridge over the Cispus River and old guard station and took the .35 mile stick part of the lollipop trail up onto a set of switchbacks that ascend the bluff with just a few downed branches to navigate around.

The loop up on the bluff was about 1.1 miles and going counterclockwise did lead to several viewpoints of Burley and Tongue Mountains in the Dark Divide.  The other side of the loop circled back through the older growth forest with some amazing giants and it was a stark contrast where it sliced between the older and an obvious newer growth section on the east side.  A woodpecker serenated as I finished the loop!

All told it was about 1.8 miles end to end.

Old Guard Station
Newer, very uniform trees.
Older, much more varied trees and understory.
