Hanging Gardens Green River Gorge — Monday, May. 11, 2026

Central Cascades

Upon returning from our view of the gorge, we were told that the owner had just been down to check out conditions and was closing until there could be some repairs. Apparently a man had fallen from some rocks the day before and "couldn't feel his legs." WHAT.

The entire staircase structure was janky, at best. Very rickety. Parts shifted and sunk as you walked on them. Like funhouse stairs that could turn into a slide at any moment. (Minus the fun.)

The canyon is very lush and beautiful. Sandstone rocks, cliffs, pools of turquoise, waterfalls spraying from up high, deep shadows with the trees and large rocks. Some teenagers were doing back flips off cliffs.

This whole place was equal parts gorgeous natural area and parts (structural) that needed to all be torn out and rebuilt. I have a nostalgia for The Old River Gorge Resort, built in the 1920's it has seen better days. Sigh. Why isn't this a state park?

Their were probably 20+ visitors while we were there and 10+ coming in as we left. 1.2 miles.
