Mount Adams South Climb — Saturday, May. 9, 2026

South Cascades > Mount Adams Area
Majestic stratovolcano

TL;DR - road to the South Climb trailhead is open and still very rough and bumpy. Continuous snow at 1.6 miles in. Don’t bother getting on your skis until then. Snow was very firm and froze overnight, hard and icy until 10am. Sun cups are forming!!! Expect congestion - parking is usually difficult.

Only 130 cars parked there on 5/9/26 which was surprisingly low! The parking lot is rough and it is not great for long vehicles like camper vans since there’s not a lot of maneuvering room and you may have to do tight turns especially as the lot fills.

PSA: please do not park right next to the log fence at the trailhead with the no parking signs. That closest parking spot is for emergency vehicles, SAR and the rangers (and the ranger can be reached if their truck needs to be moved due to an emergency.)  According to the head climbing ranger (who was there checking permits) there is at least one incident involving SAR per week all summer!  Stay safe out there. :/

Also - your permit dollars directly support Mount Adams. Please get one at recreation.gov before climbing!

Nice pics! Did you find flowing water at Lunch Counter or did you need to melt snow? Thanks!

Honestly we did not look for water there since we were camped lower down but I would imagine that it’s likely water is flowing there. Looked more like late June than May up there!

Thanks for the reply! And yes, it's been a crazy low snow year.
