Anacortes Community Forest Lands - Mount Erie — Sunday, May. 10, 2026

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island
starflower in bloom @ Mount Erie

The view from the top seemed much more delightful because we walked from all the way at the bottom. 😁

Porta potty available both at the trailhead at the bottom and up at the top. The latch of the door to the one at the top was initially stuck in between the closed and open position, resulting in a door that would not open. You can get it open pretty easily so if you find this, try to slide it to the position you need with your finger tip.

Fringecup, paintbrush, and starflower were in bloom all along the way. We saw 2 instances of coralroot orchid (Corallorhiza). The Forest Service has a fun page about them:

Those Cheating Hearts: An unfortunate mycorrhizal fungus enters into a “committed but unloving relationship” with a mycotrophic wildflower. The fungus unconditionally befriends and nurtures its compatriot Corallorhiza never once to receive even a glimmer of friendship, respect, or thank you in return. Welcome to “those cheating hearts,” the coralroot orchids.

paintbrush: you can clearly see how it got this name

I think what you have labeled as ghost pipe is actually coral root. Ghost pipe is all white with bells hanging downward.
