Lower Big Quilcene River — Saturday, May. 2, 2026

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Trailhead

Short overnight with the 6 yo to Bark Shanty. The trail is stunning shape the first few miles, pretty lush with a few wildflowers, charming creeks/tiny cascade pools that provide regular interest for kiddos.

The trailhead (holds about 12-15 cars) and was pretty full when we arrived late afternoon. We found out why - Bark Shanty camp was hoppin.’ Good vibes but there was one big group, and several others, including a family. Seemed like good vibes but maybe 15-17 tents. This camp could really use a toilet. Ran into a family who camped at Jolly and said they pretty much had it to themselves. We ended up at a small creek/trailside spot with amazing white noise. The kid slept 11 hours!

We explored up a bit towards Notch Pass but not far enough to deliver any useful trail beta.

Saw evidence of some horse traffic (though I have no idea how a trailer could get in or out of the parking lot) and were passed by a trail running couple and one super nice motorcycle.

Zero trash along the trail, well behaved dogs and good vibes. We had a great time.

Lower Big Quilcene River junction with Notch Pass just past the camp
The Notch Pass trail is narrower and far more rugged
