Trip Report

Bullion Basin Snowshoe — Saturday, Apr. 25, 2026

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Traversing a steep slope

Given the low snowfall this winter, we thought we were going for a hike. Surprise! The Crystal parking lot was packed with skiers because it was the last day. Only one lift was running and the resort was throwing a big party (which we heard all day from the Bullion Basin side). The trail was snow covered starting from Gold Creek Rd. We had brought snowshoes just in case and snowshoed up the ski slopes all the way Bullion Basin. It was almost too steep because the corn snow was sliding under our feet. I fell once and slid immediately. Bummer having to reclimb the section. We quit above the basin, having reached our turn around time of 2:30. Snow was so soft (it was sunny and warm) that one of us continued on snowshoes and the other one found it easier to just plunge step and make occasional post holes. The best part was glissading down the ski slopes.
