We needed a short hike before going to a birthday party so we started at the Fisher Hill Bridge (Trestle) trailhead and hiked upstream a couple of miles and back.

Parking is at a pullout on the shoulder of SR 142 just before the Klickitat Rail Trail crosses the Klickitat River on a high trestle.

We started out by crossing Fisher Hill Bridge and hiking upstream along the west bank of the Klickitat River.

We were surprised to see that an area that had become an eyesore of garbage, abandoned vehicles, campers and travel trailers had been cleaned up. According to the Klickitat Trail Conservancy newsletter: "Using EPA funding, through an agreement between Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the Yakama Nation, land owned by WDFW along the portion of the Klickitat Trail from the Fisher Hill Trailhead to the Yakama Nation fish facility has been cleaned up." WDFW has created designated parking and blocked off much its lands from motorized vehicles.

We hiked onward upstream, birding and enjoying views of wildflowers along the trail and the rushing Klickitat River beside us.

It was a sunny day but very windy so we were not surprised to only encounter one trail runner and one bicyclist.

Our best wildflower find was blooming Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria). Photo by Susan Saul
