Took advantage of a beautiful Saturday to hike in Cowiche Canyon Preserve. We started in the parking lot at the east end of the Canyon at 10 AM. Our 6.3-mile loop was Cowiche Canyon - Tieton Andestite - Historic Jeep Trail - Radio Flyer - Lone Pine - Cowiche Canyon to the car.
Balsamroot is blooming on the grassy hillsides along the north side of the canyon. Once we reached the uplands via Tieton Andesite trail, there were many wildflowers in bloom including phlox, sagebrush violet, gold-star, and a few patches of Hooker's balsamroot. Clear skies meant the tops of Adams and Rainier were visible from the old jeep road.
I was amazed by how loud the bees were as we descended back into the canyon. You could hear them from at least 100 yds away. We never did find where they were busy closer to the creek itself.
