Armed with a good looking forecast, the likelihood of fresh snow, and a timely trip report filed by iotium for a hike recorded on Sunday, March 29 (good timing and info for us….thank you!!), we headed up to do this hike. Road in was occasionally bare, but covered with 1” to 2” of fluffy snow most of the way to the trailhead. We were in a 4WD, but driving in it was never an issue. We were the only vehicle in the parking lot, and did not see any cars or people on the road in or out, or on the trail. We arrived at 7 a.m. Upper Big Quilcene trail was covered with varying amounts of snow all the way from the trailhead to Marmot Pass, with the deepest being after Camp Mystery. We never had to use any traction devices, nor did we experience any post holing. Poles and gaiters ended up being the main equipment for the day. Trail was in reasonable condition, with 5-6 blowdowns that were easy to navigate, along with many branches which we moved when possible. Fresh snowfall from Sunday and overnight provided spectacular scenery. Cold temperatures, fresh snow, sunshine, and a stunning blue sky made for a great hike!! 😊🥾😎
