The word of the day is: Muddy! The last time I hiked it was in July 2024 and what a difference it makes to come in the Spring! The lower and middle falls were raging compared to then.
I grabbed Benny the dog and we left the house at 7:00am this morning to go scout Little Mashel Falls before I lead a hike there next week. There were multiple other cars in the lot when we arrived, but only only saw two people coming back from the falls on our hike in. The Bud Blancher Trail was in great shape and only had some muddy/wet spots when you got closer to the trail up to the falls. The Little Mashel Falls Trail, on the other hand, was very muddy, especially at a junction with another off-shoot trail that takes you to the river. We got turned around at that point and took the off-shoot, but after checking the map got back on track.
The trail down to the Lower Falls was much steeper and muddier than the trail to the Middle Falls. We didn't go all the way to the bottom of the Lower Falls, but we did stop at a good point and get a nice view before turning to go back up. The trail to the Middle Falls is much more moderate and less muddy. Benny was scared to go down to the bottom of the falls, so we stayed and had a snack at the stairs before heading back. There were a lot more people coming in and we passed about 8 other dogs. Overall, it was a great hike despite the mud and I'm excited to introduce my group to it next week!
