Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

Come prepared with shoes that can get wet and muddy. Boots, water shoes, your old shoes you haven’t thrown away. The trail is muddy with sinking mud that goes up to your ankles in many places. Plenty of standing water on trail but only for short sections, like one step in the puddle and then you’ll be good. The worst is by the climb up onto the island, as always but there are a lot of logs you can walk on. Just note that since your shoes are muddy by now, they will be slick. Once to the island you walk through an enchanting juniper forest with a fern understory, it feels like you are entering a secret garden. Come out of the forest to amazing views and the best beach in the puget sound, it’s pure sand. The sand once off the island was nice and warm but the water was cold. Obviously it’s only 55 and March but our PNW kids did not care. They wore their swimsuits and played in the water and sand for 3 hours. Highly recommend climbing to the top for the best views. If you want to see Mount Baker, you’ll need to walk about 1/3 a mile down the beach past the upside down stump to see him. Lots of new drift wood and logs this year. Shore birds galore. Eagles and hawks flying overhead. It was truly an amazing afternoon. Only dandelions, Indian plum, flowering red current and desert parsley blooming.
