It was a beautiful spring day in Anacortes. Weather was comfortable around 50. A little bit of wind but not bad. We parked at Heart Lake and walked around the lake. One tree down that is easy to step over. Multiple muddy patches with sinking mud. A few areas where water is flowing down the trail. Indian Plum and Skunk cabbage blooming around the lake. We cross the road towards the Sugarloaf/Mt Erie parking lot but took the first left to head back towards Heart Lake. This area has the most mud and water on trail. We finished earlier than we originally planned so we drove across the street and parked halfway up Mt Erie to take the southern trail up Sugarloaf. Sweeping views. Wildflowers just starting in the meadows but we saw 6 types of flowers. Another few weeks and the meadows will be blooming. We saw the leaves of multiple flowers coming up. While coming up through the meadow a hawk circled around twice. He was eye level with us as we were going up, so we got to see him very well. Spent about 10 minutes at the top before heading back down the way we came. This approach is shorter than the main approach to Sugarloaf but still steep and rocky.
Highly recommend a picture of the map, or a printout. Trails are all labeled nicely with numbers.
flowers seen: Larkspur, chickweed monkey flower, blue eyed Mary, Indian plum, skunk cabbage, flowering red current, desert parsley and prairie star.
